Plans for Patton skate park move ahead

Skateboarders in Hendersonville got the nod from the City Council on Thursday night for the design of the skate park to be built at Patton Park.

The Hendersonville Kids Alliance to Skate has been working to bring the skate plaza to Hendersonville for more than a year. The alliance needs to raise $100,000 for the skate plaza, which could be completed by September 2008. The city of Hendersonville and a private donation are covering the remaining $250,000.

Thursday night, the skate park's engineer firm, Grindline, showed the Council the final plans for the park.

"We had the final design approved by the skaters and by the city's engineering department," Matt Fluegee with Grindline said Friday.

Zac Cawthorne, 17, who has been skating for more than three years, said he is excited about the project moving another step forward.

"We have a fundraiser in July that will help raise the rest of the money that we need," Cawthorne said. "I plan on selling tickets for the games at that event."

Cawthorne said the park has shown him that with hard work and diligence, you can accomplish anything.

"I am so excited," he said. "The city has been so supportive. We worked hard to organize this properly and the city listened."

Diane Hendrickson, a parent coordinator with the Hendersonville Alliance to Skate, said she is ready for the next phase of the project.

"We have received good responses from all the skaters about the design," she said.

Some minor changes have been made to the design since its conception.

"We were originally working on a street scene design with stairs, rails, ledges and curbs," she said.

"Now we have incorporated some transitional features such as quarter pipes and bowls to incorporate something for everyone."
